Today, vacuum cleaners are essential household and commercial cleaning tools, bringing efficient and dust-free living environments to millions of families. However, this convenient device has gone through more than 160 years of evolution, from primitive manual tools to lightweight, high-performance electric appliances, constantly upgrading cleaning efficiency and user experience.

Before the birth of vacuum cleaners, people relied on brooms and rags for cleaning. These traditional methods could only remove large debris but stirred up fine dust easily, causing secondary pollution. In the 1860s, the first-generation manual vacuum devices emerged. These early products adopted bellows and crank structures to generate simple suction, marking the beginning of active dust removal. Yet they were labor-intensive and low-efficient, failing to achieve large-scale popularization.
The real breakthrough came in 1901. British engineer Hubert Booth invented the world’s first genuine vacuum cleaner based on the vacuum suction principle. Different from the previous air-blowing cleaning way, it used negative pressure to suck dust and store it in filter bags, laying the core working principle for all modern vacuum cleaners. Though bulky, machine-driven and inconvenient to move, it proved the feasibility of vacuum dust removal and opened a new era for mechanical cleaning.

In 1907, the first portable electric vacuum cleaner was invented in the United States. It abandoned huge mechanical structures and adopted mini motors, making household vacuum cleaning possible. In the following decades, continuous technical optimizations were made. The popularization of filter bag technology, motor upgrading and structural miniaturization made vacuum cleaners gradually enter ordinary families from commercial and industrial scenarios.

After entering the 21st century, the vacuum cleaner industry ushered in rapid innovation. Traditional wired and bag-type vacuums were gradually replaced by wireless, bagless and portable models. Cyclone separation technology solves dust clogging problems, while lightweight body design, multi-scene brush heads and low-noise technology greatly improve usability. Modern vacuums can clean carpets, rugs, sofas, gaps and car interiors, realizing full-scene cleaning coverage.
